May 13th “Sext Up Kids” CBC DocZone

“From tiny tots strutting bikini-clad bodies in beauty pageants to companies marketing itty-bitty thongs and padded bras to 9 year olds, images of ever younger sexualized girls have become commonplace.  This documentary exposes how growing up in a hyper-sexualized culture hurts our kids.  Teens and pre-teens show and tell what they are doing and why they are doing it.  For every parent who think, “that’s not my son or daughter,” Sext up Kids is your wake up call.”  Join us in watching this powerful documentary and short discussion to follow.

May 27th Beyond the Gods and Back:  Religion’s Demise and Rise and Why it Matters

An new book on religion in Canada by Reginald Bibby.  A short review and a discussion of this 2011 book by Bibby, one of Canada’s leading experts on religious and social trends.  Bibby has surveyed trends in the important of religion in people’s lives in Canada.  he has found that “the dominant story is the emergence of unprecedented polarization between those who are religious and those who are not, and what this means for personal and social life.”  On a world-wide basis there has been a rise in evangelical Christianity which could have important social and political consequences.

How will Unitarians respond to these trends and their effects on our social and religious lives?  Facilitator:  Ewen Coxworth
