RE Colour Groups Our Religious Education program is a cooperative program where all parents and members of the congregation are involved in the nurturing of our young attendees. In the interest of providing each young person with a fun and rewarding experience, we offer six groups with approximate age ranges listed below. Each group has its own leaders, curriculum and focus. Depending on class numbers (usually 4-8 children per class) and volunteer support, we may adjust the group's age range slightly. If you are not sure where your child would fit best, please talk to the DRE. The Nursery and Parent Lounge (0-2 yrs) Babies and toddlers enjoy our nursery under the care of a parent or guardian. A wide variety of toys, books and craft materials provide a creative and fun environment for little ones. A snack, usually crackers and fruit, will be provided unless parents specify otherwise. The adjacent parent lounge is designed to be a quiet room for parents to listen to the service but also to remain accessible to their little ones. Red Group (3-4 yrs) We have chosen a dynamic pre-school curriculum for this age group called Celebrating Me & My World. This curriculum's overall goal is to have pre-schoolers celebrate themselves, the people in their lives and the world around them. Lots of activity and messy crafts! Orange Group (5-7 yrs) This group of children will be following the Treasure Hunting - Take Two curriculum. The goal of this curriculum, according to the author Gaia Brown, is "to involve children in the excitement of of the search for meaning in life." Meaning is applied to the Rainbow principles via a variety of activities and songs. Yellow Group (8-10 yrs) Our Yellow group will be studying Spirit of Adventure. Again, the words of the author describe this curriculum best, "I challenged myself to write a curriculum that teaches UU identity without the usual arts and crafts projects. I've included activities like dissecting a computer, building cantilevered architecture using graham crackers, interviewing a sports coach, eating smoked oysters, and singing Jingle Bells in "dog" language. Bring those active busy children in and watch them be amazed!". (Katie T. Erslev, 2000). Green Group (11-12 yrs) We will be offering the Traditions with a Wink curriculum for this age group. A new curriculum for us that helps put our UU identity into words for our middle schoolers. Skits, trivia, inventing prayers, drilling Yule logs, Darwin fish counting, potato worship etc. are all designed to make this a very hands-on fun Sunday morning experience. Youth (13+ yrs) Our Youth are encouraged to shape their own areas of study. We may discuss how the mind works, ponder philosophical questions and continue our quest to find the top UU pop-culture icons. With dedicated Youth advisors the sky's the limit! |
